Nouveau-Porn Violet+Rye.
A couple of months ago I went on a twitter triad about “why pornography was so low brow?!”. With what we now have on Vimeo - in terms of cinematography, artistic expression and just overall HD quality - I could not get my head around why most porn these days still looks cheap, cheesy and dumbed down. Well along popped Uncommon Appetites Violet+Rye into my twitter stream, a married couple in their twenties living in NYC, exploring and exposing their sex lives for the world on their blog, tumblr and twitter. Violet and Rye are not pro-pornographers, in the sense they don’t do this as professionals, they make what we call amateur porn - although I would say that what Violet+Rye produces are far away from the grainy, shaken, dark bedroom rump videos we’re use to seeing in the amateur porn category on tube sites.
I’ve mentioned Uncommon Appetites on here before, but I feel I need to dig deeper in this post. As mainstream pro porn is at a stand still and most of the productions coming out, are the generic three to four positions and a money shot – Violet & Rye offers more – they are very much bridging the gap and blurring the lines between soft erotica and hardcore pornography, they are taking an artistic vision to their videos and photos, they are telling a story – one of them as a couple, but also mini stories in their videos, small tales that come to life with moving pictures, music, sound, light, editing and naked bodies.
As I mentioned before, Violet & Rye are not pros, they have day jobs and therefor keep the uh-la-la on the downlow and don’t show their faces, but I can’t help to wonder if they have some experience in photography, editing, cinematography etc. Cause the level of their productions, puts most big porn company productions to shame! If all of this just comes from passion to share and a good eye, well, that’s even more impressive then!
Violet+Rye is very much nouveau-porn 2011, people who don’t just do this for cash and fame, but because they have something to show and tell, they get as much out of their pornography as we – the audience – do.
I once tried to figure out what the difference was between an erotic photographer/filmmaker and a pornographer(?). What I came up with was, that the erotic artist does not produce something that doesn’t turn them on, while the pornographer will produce anything, as long as there is a profit to be made (of course within the boundaries of what’s legal). When watching porn made by a pornographer, you can often get the feeling that the performers aren’t turned on by the action happening, that not even the producers are turned on – you do not get that vibe from Uncommon Appetites – it’s porn that makes you feel good.
But it’s not just whats behind the productions of photos and videos, it’s very much also the technical part of what Violet+Rye are doing. It’s just so fucking cool! It’s the most rad art that you can jack-off to.
